The Third Reference Group Meeting on Nuclear & Radiological Emergency Preparedness was joined by 16 National Societies and held in Fukushima, the affected area. The objective of the meeting was to discuss preparedness for nuclear and radiological emergencies and the IFRC guidelines. On Day 1, the participants visited the Fukushima Prefectural Office for courtesy call. Fukushima Prefectural Office presented chopsticks made from Aizu lacquerware as a commemorative gift to the participants. The Japanese word for chopsticks is “hashi”, also meaning “bridge”, and the gift shows a wish for the visit to be a bridge between Fukushima and the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
