Remnants of 2011 tsunami tell residents’ story of disaster in Sendai

SENDAI--As a stark reminder of the power of the 2011 tsunami, Sendai officials will allow the public to see the foundations of homes in a devastated area in Wakabayashi Ward here from Aug. 2.

About 800 households in the seaside Arahama district were engulfed by a huge wave spawned by the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011. The Sendai city government is preparing to open the residential area for viewing.

It aims to convey the terror of the tsunami and tell about the residents’ lives before the earthquake and tsunami.

Signboards have been set up containing pictures prior to and just after the natural disaster and the testimonies of residents who lost their homes.
