My name is Caragh Gentilucci and I am a student from Massachusetts. Although I do not remember the Fukushima disaster being on the news when it occurred, I did enjoy learning about it. The most impactful thing I have learned about the Fukushima disaster is just how many people were affected and how their lives were permanently changed. I also thought it was really impactful learning about the confusion and lack of organization throughout the disaster. The lack of communication between TEPCO and the prime minister was shocking. I also thought it was shocking to hear about the cover-ups that were made to prevent blame placed on certain companies. However, I would still like to know more about clean up efforts and what is being done to the abandoned parts of the disaster area. From this experience, I will take away not forgetting that people around the world also suffer from disasters whether it is widely talked about or not. Prior to this assignment, I did not know that the Fukushima triple disaster ever occurred and I think it is important to realize that most foreign disasters aren’t talked about unless they affect the nation you live in. I think that society should realize that some disasters are not preventable but we are able to prepare for them. From this disaster, I think the most important takeaway is that there should always be some preparation for any kind of disaster, whether they are predicted or not.
