Item Description
My name is Lindsey F. and I am from Boston, Massachusetts. The research topic that I choose was about family pets being affected by the Fukushima disaster. My perspective on this issue is that pets should not have been left to fend for themselves during the disaster. I think that pets should be treated just like humans, and the pets should have been taken with the people when they left because they were apart of the family too. The most impactful thing that I learned about the abandonment of pets during the disaster was that when the people fled to other places, the pets were chained up and left to fend for themselves. The pets were left for long periods of time by themselves without any food, shelter, or love. This impacted me because I believe pets should be treated well and given the love and attention that they need. I also believe no animal should ever be by themselves or mistreated. Some things that I still question is why people would leave their loved pets by themselves and how come no one came to help them? I still want to learn a lot about the Fukushima disaster affecting the family pets. One thing I want to learn more about is how other people can help these pets today. I want to know if there is any way that people that live outside of Japan can help these poor animals. Even if it is by sending food or adopting, there was not much talk about what people could do. I will take away that not every family pet can always be saved in disasters like Fukushima. Also even though I am sad about these dogs being left, I am sure that their families are sad they had to leave and lose them too. Society can learn that these disasters affect everyone and everything. Also society can try to help out these animals in Japan that are still suffering today without the proper care and homes. Society should learn that these disasters are horrible and everything will most likely be taken away if a disaster is to happen. All in all, many family pets and animals have unfortunately been separated from each other and most likely have died.
