My name is Alyssa Moreira. My perspective on this disaster that is was very sad, but very much exacerbated by humans. The most interesting thing I learned was that the disaster impacted women the most. I did not even think about how they are affected by birth defects of their children due to radiation, and dealing with their menstrual cycle in the shelters. This was very impactful as I saw the disproportionate effects that 311 had on Japanese women. I am still questioning just how the problem of radiation will be solved and how to prevent future birth defects due to natural disasters and radiation. I would like to learn more about the protests against the inhumane polices that the Japanese government still has in place about the relocation of the people. From this experience, I can take away that women must be especially considered in the case of natural disasters, and how gender roles play a huge part in recovery. Society can learn that different people are affected disproportionately by tsunamis and earthquakes, and that the people should be treated as such.
