1.1 Purpose
One of the health problems caused by the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident was thyroid cancer in childhood caused by internal exposure to radioactive iodine.
In response to the Tokyo Electric Power Company's (TEPCO’s) Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident, Fukushima Prefecture started a Thyroid Ultrasound Examination program to monitor the long-term health of children. Preliminary Baseline Screening (Initial Screening) aims to check the baseline condition of participants’ thyroid glands.

Residents of Fukushima Prefecture aged 0-18 years (born between 2 April 1992 and 1 April 2011) as of 11 March 2011.
