March 24, 2011 Zuigan-ji, one of Japan’s most famous Buddhist temples, located in Matsushima, has been damaged as a result of the massive earthquake and tsunami that devastated Japan’s eastern shores on March 11, 2011. According to reports, more than 100 cultural artifacts at the site have been damaged, while mortar walls have suffered cracks and fractures, and one section has collapsed entirely.
