Chubu Electric Power Co. on Monday May 9, 2011 decided to shut down the Hamaoka nuclear power station in Shizuoka Prefecture in response to an urgent request from Prime Minister Naoto Kan due to an 87 percent chance of a magnitude 8.0 quake hitting the Tokai region within the next 30 years. This is a part of the effort to prevent a nuclear disaster like the one occurring at Fukushima Daiichi Plant.
