2011 年 3 月 11 日 14 時 46 分に発生した東北地方太平洋沖地震（Mw 9.0）は大規模な津波を引き起こし，東北地方の太平洋岸を中心に甚大な被害をもたらした．今回発生した津波によって，陸前高田市立博物館（岩手県陸前高田市字砂畑）は壊滅的な被害を受けた．同館は 1959 年開館の総合博物館で，収蔵庫には陸前高田の自然・歴史・文化に関する多くの資料が収められていた．
